Getting around the Czech Republic is fairly easy if you are travelling from one city to another. For example to travel from Prague to Brno, the second city of the Czech Republic and what the Czech’s call a large sleepy village, takes only two hours by train and costs about 10 Euro, by Western standards fairly cheap.
This link http://www.cd.cz/static/eng/ will take you directly to the English version of the National Czech Railways. Listed are all time tables and special offers. Of course you can buy tickets through other web sites, however I have found that they are generally more expensive.
One great thing about travel by rail in the Czech Republic is that the trains run on time, they are clean, and they are safe. This is always a surprise when one is used to the British rail network.
Travelling from the Czech Republic or Prague to any other major city in Europe is also very easy, for example a couple of days break in Vienna, Austria, the train only takes around four and a half hours from Prague, and can be bought for about 40 Euro return, great value.
The train is the best method of seeing the country if you are using public transport. There is a good bus service also provided by Eurolines http://www.eurolines.com/ through I am not a fun of the bus – not being able to get up and walk around, no buffet car, and not very good toilets – all these help me pay the very small difference for better transport by train.
There are river cruises, metros, and taxis, all of these are covered in the city sections.
Personally I prefer to drive. If I travel from city to city the train is fine, but if I am heading off sightseeing a car is always the better option for getting to places that are not very accessible by public transport. I have found car hire fairly reasonable compared to other European countries – I have hired a car a few time from around 200 Euro per week – eventually I will get some good links here for car hire.
